How to Choose the Best Toys for BabiesYou have just brought home your bundle of joy. You know that you want to provide the best for your baby, including the best baby toys.Homegrown vs. Store BoughtBabies are often entertained by the simplest things. A piece of tape on their finger can keep a six-month-old entertained for hours. Yet parents are spending thousands of dollars every year on store bought contraptions. Is a store bought toy really better for your baby? Would they not be just as entertained with a home made contraption?Perhaps a combination of homemade and store bought toys is the answer. There is nothing wrong with entertaining your baby creatively with items around your house. Does your child enjoy playing with your pots and pans? Then let him! And consider buying him his own set of toy pots and pans! Build off the interests of your child as you watch them learn about and explore their world. How to Find the Right Toy for Your ChildrenOnce you have determined what your baby likes to look at and to do, buy toys and books that coincide with her interests. Sometimes the best selling toys are not the best option for you baby. Start small by buying your baby a few things. If you have a baby shower, chances are you will be given some toys. Let your baby explore these and see which ones she prefers. Then buy more toys that coincide with these interests and preferences. It is important to remember that your baby may surprise you. You may buy one of the most popular toys for infants, and your baby may hate it. Or, you may find your baby is easily entertained by a toilet paper roll! The important thing to remember is to be flexible.Considerations When Choosing the Best Baby ToysThere are many considerations to keep in mind when considering what toys to buy for your baby. Besides their interests, you will want to consider factors such as your child's age, gender, and the safety of the toy.Your Baby's Age and GenderFirst, when buying infant learning toys, do not buy toys that are too advanced for your baby. Some parents think that by giving their baby advanced toys to play with, they can encourage their development. The fact is, most babies will reach their developmental milestones at the same time, and toys will not help. By giving your baby advanced toys, they will just be ignored. So parents should look for age appropriate toys for their babies.Until about three months of age, babies do not have the ability to play with toys. The best baby toys for new babies are toys they can look at and listen to. From three months to about six months, the best toys for your baby are those they can bat at or suck on. Try to buy toys that are soft because babies do not have much hand control at this age and they may hit themselves with the toy. After six months, experiment with different infant learning toys. Find toys your baby enjoys interacting with, and encourage her to play with them. Do not be too tied down to gender specific toys. If your baby girl likes to push cars around, buy her some cars. You can encourage your little girl to be a lady in other ways. However, you may want to start with toys that should appeal to your baby's gender. Just do not be too rigid with this.
