Board Games for Children-Does it Serve the Purpose?

There are board games everywhere - online board games, board games for kids and adults, and board games for families.
Normally these games are played on a grid or similar playing field with counters or other markers that are moved across the board during play to signify actions relevant to the point of the game. Although many people think of board games for children only, they are actually popular with all age groups. Some, like the ever venerable Monopoly, have been around for generations.

Popular Board Games

There are many popular board games on the market designed specifically for younger players. Here is a short list of board games for children.
Candy Land
For many children, board games as a source of entertainment begin with Candy Land. The colorful playing field and easy to understand picture cards make play simple but satisfying and fun. Candy Land has long been the favorite first board game for generations of children.
Chutes and Ladders
Parents are drawn to this classic board game because it has a moral lesson. Children who are pictured doing naughty things are sent down a chute and back towards the beginning of the game. If they're pictured doing something nice, they get to climb up a ladder and get closer to winning the game.
Hungry Hungry Hippo
In this game children use mechanized hippos to collect small balls. The one who collects the most balls is the winner. The concept is simple even for young children to apprehend and the play is a good group activity.
Crocodile Dentist
The object of this game is to remove teeth from a crocodile's mouth before he clamps down on your fingers. Expect lots of delighted squealing and giggling with this one!
Don't Break the Ice
Children use mallets to knock plastic ice cubes out of a retaining box one at a time. The object is to see how many cubes can be removed before the whole things collapses taking the little plastic man in the center with it. The player who collapses the ice loses.
Battleship
Battleship is a two-person strategy game where children try to sink the other player's ships using a numbered coordinate grid. Players call out coordinates and place different colored pegs on their board to signify hits and misses.
Cranium Games

Zingo!
This kid-friendly version of Bingo helps children to learn their patterns and shapes.

Board games can be purchased at just about any retail store. In fact, even online board games are becoming popular! But the computer is not going to replace traditional board games any time soon because part of the fun of game play is in being with your friends and competing.
