The first step in toy safety is to ensure that the toys you buy are safe for your child. Before buying any toy, assess the risk for the toy by keeping your child in mind. You may asses it with the help of the following questions:
  • Is the toy age-appropriate for your child? This is particularly important for toddlers and babies, as toys designed for older children may contain small parts which can be swallowed by younger children.
  • Is the toy sturdy? Are there any parts that are likely to break off, creating a danger for your child?
  • Does the toy meet any safety standards? For example, outdoor play equipment may meet certain standards. If these standards are not met, then the equipment may not be safe.
  • Does the toy have inbuilt safety devices, if appropriate?
  • Does your child have any disabilities, which may make certain toys unsafe for them?
  • Are there any pointed edges?
  • Could the toy be used as a weapon by a child who does not understand the danger?
  • Can your child use the toy in a safe manner? Are they likely to be used it in a way in which it is not intended to be used?
